At MentalNote, we're committed to protecting patient privacy, but we're also aware of the growing environmental impact of AI. That's why we're proud to announce that MentalNote supports permanent carbon removal by donating 5% of our revenue to Climeworks, the global leader in Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology that permanently removes CO₂ from the atmosphere.
What Does "Carbon Negative" Mean?
Being carbon negative means we remove more carbon from the atmosphere than we produce. Here's our environmental impact:
The average user runs ~1,000 transcription queries per year.
Each transcription generates ~5 grams of CO₂ (a generous estimate).
That's about 5,000 grams, or 5 kg of CO₂ annually per user.
We rounded up to 10 kg (2× the estimate) to account for higher usage and ensure we're overestimating impact, not underestimating.
DAC Offset Reality
Direct Air Capture currently costs approximately $600-1,100 per ton of CO₂ permanently removed.
This is significantly more expensive than basic carbon offsets because DAC actually removes existing CO₂ from the atmosphere rather than just preventing future emissions.
At an average cost of $800 per ton, offsetting 10 kg costs about $8 per user annually.
Our Commitment We donate $12 per user annually to Climeworks — enough to permanently remove approximately 15 kg of CO₂ per user through their cutting-edge Direct Air Capture technology.
Result: Each user removes 1.5× more CO₂ than they produce through MentalNote usage. That's carbon negative.
